Improv & Famous Film Moments

The role of improvisational skill in largely unscripted movies, like the work of Christopher Guest, is pretty well known. When I watch comedy movies I also often think that particularly spontaneous moments, a joke here or there by Tina Fey or Will Ferrell, might be off the cuff. However in the following video there are several famous film moments that I definitely thought were written into the script, but can be more credited to the in-the-moment chops of the performers acting. Totally worth a look-see:

Patton Oswalt describes comedy resurrection and insurrection in his keynote

Did you know that the gigantic Just for Laughs festival in Montreal has a keynote speech? Patton Oswalt just used that forum exactly how you would fantasize that he would (although he was wearing regular cloths and not a Jacobean doublet).

To Comedians: “Hey, ‘know what I was thinking the other day? Everything I know about succeeding as a comedian and ultimately as an artist is worthless now, and I couldn’t be happier about that.”
To Executives & the Suits: “Comedians are getting more and more comfortable with the idea that if we’re not successful, it’s not because we haven’t gotten our foot in the door, or nobody’s given us a hand up. We can do that ourselves now. Every single day we can do more and more without you and depend on you less and less.”

We Pretty Ugly

Improv luminary1 Eliza Skinner just started a web project that we’re all about over here at Improv Wins! Eliza is strikingly beautiful and hilarious (which also means nasty, weird, and disturbing: you know, all the synonyms for funny) so she came up with a scheme to get ladies to send her their ugly-funny faces 2  . We Pretty Ugly is a simple, yet insightful, visual exploration of the paradoxes of femininity and comedy. It is also a rad collection of dumb faces!

  1. I was looking up synonyms for hero when “luminary” presented itself. However, there were way more creative/incorrect choices on that list which I also wanted to share with you. Crampfish.
  2. She’s also taking submissions right now!

What Improvisers Do

We aren’t totally sure who made the above image1 but we are totally sure that it’s mostly funny. Yeah, people who don’t watch improv sometimes think that doing improv is doing standup and yeah, most of our parents don’t get it either. The weird part of the image is that improvisers are sad alcoholics2. The best part of this image is obviously that weird spaceman riding that horse in a unicorn costume.

By the way Improv Wins readers, if you see an image like the one above send it our way!

  1. Our investigating team seems to think that a friend of Jon Vaughn‘s named Alan made it. We also don’t know Jon Vaughn. Okay, you got us, our investigating team has the day off today.
  2. Or maybe the creator is crying for help. If only our investigating team were in the office!

5 Lines Scenes: Announcing the Moontower Comedy Festival

What happens when a bunch of powerhouse producers all get together to put on one massive event?

What happens when you get over 10 venues and a couple of performances all happening under one umbrella?

What happens when an entire city focuses up and puts on a humongous week of comedy?

You get Austin’s first annual Moontower Comedy and Oddity Festival taking place the last week of April. We’ll post more details as they become available but for now we know that the people behind Cap City, Paramount, The New Movement and Hell Yes Fest1 are all involved.

  1. Hell Yes Fest recently penned this post explaining their involvement and the future of their festival

5 Line Scenes: The Daily Affirmation Warmup

This is not a new video by means, as it went viral way back in 2009ish, but the core of this child’s message is pretty dang relevant and we think it would make for a ridiculously delightful warmup exercise.

Stand in a circle1, taking turns saying all of the things you like. Be sure and mention some positive things about the people you’re about to play with on stage. Mention something about pajamas.

Now you’re warmed up, feeling fun and you got to stand on a sink for minute or so2.

  1. Shocking!

5 Line Scenes: Funny Bones and the Pepsi Refresh Project

Yeah, we mostly focus on the Long side of improv forms around these parts, but you can’t deny how cool this is. New Orleans based Funny Bones is a group dedicated to performing improv games in hospitals for kids. That’s pretty incredible and you can help them become even more incredible by voting for their idea on the Pepsi Refresh Project.

We’ll let you get the dirt on how it works and for those who like to click and watch things, check out the video from Funny Bones below. When you’re finished up, head over Pepsi Refresh Project and vote1 for Funny Bones!
