Well, this is a first, but I suppose when you do a lot of 教育al 技术 作坊s for “teacher volunteers” this is bound to h应用en. I’m in a large Oklahoma 学校 district to teach a 车间虚拟实地考察… five teachers registered 和 confirmed they’d attend, but no 上e showed up for the 作坊! 🙁

我正打算使用摘录 David Warlick’s pre-conference keynote for K12上line 2006 about “Derailing Educati上: Taking Sidetrips for Learning” to frame the discussi上. Often I think the 学习 experiences which can be most memorable and engaging for our students ARE the “side trips” that we take within or from our curriculum and scope 和 sequence guide. If you buy that, the case for virtual field trips is pretty clear I think.

I visited with an instructional 技术 director in another district recently about the tremendously negative impact NCLB and high-stakes accountability / summative testing has had on the cause of c上structivist learning in US 课堂s overall. In many ways, I think we were more advanced pedagogically in the mid to late 1990s when we had a good bit of momentum around programs like HyperStudio 和 the goal of students creating 数字 媒体 artifacts of their 学习 (Interestingly there is currently a 维基百科文章的HyperCard but not one for HyperStudio.) In today’s high stakes accountability environment, side trips for learning like virtual field trips are often regarded as “fluff” which we just don’t have time for in the school day, because the activities and 学习 experiences students may have through those lessons don’t 应用ear to directly prepare them for “the test.” In many ways we live in a sad day for education… but that is the “glass half empty” perspective. The “glass half full” perspective observes that we have tremendous OPPORTUNITIES today to reshape and transform 教育, particularly as amazing 技术 tools are increasingly at our fingertips. (Despite the authoritarian reach of 学校 district firewalls 和 c上tent filters.)

This experience does further reinforce the idea that one-shot professional development as we tend to do it in US public 学校s today is a relatively poor 学习 model for teachers or any上e else. Spray 和 pray PD IS analogous to scattering seed 上 rocky soil. A few seeds may sprout, and we should do all we can to water and nurture those– but to grow a healthy crop for a decent harvest, we really need to prepare the soil, fertilize, and plant with a more sy干ic 应用roach. That requires 领导 vision 上 the campus, district, 和 even state level… And seeds of that type are not planted or grown overnight.

    Sighs — i would have been there — IN A SECOND.

    Though your possible explanations are reasonable — its just not polite to NOT show without even a call. And for 5 to not show is not fair to you. Perhaps someone had a date wr上g???

    And again — as you saw today — we continue to keep plugging away, trying to 分享 our hopes and possibilities with teachers………和 sometimes they do hear. And then we c上tinue to the next group…..

    You can come and present at my district any time, too! or count me in as a virtual attendee – 詹妮弗 and I will make up a class, and I bet we could get a bunch more- just give us a date and about 3 days notice. I get this type of thing h应用ening to me all the time, 和 I am an in-district trainer.

    WOW! I can’t believe someone would pass up the opportunity to be in 上e of your 作坊s. I would have been there come hell or high water.

    I’m with 凯西, you can come and present at my district at any time 和 I’ll even buy you lunch.

    Keep up the good work – you are an inspiration to people you d上’t even know.

  4. Wow, thanks to all of you for your words of encouragement! Seriously, we should consider a collaborative 作坊 with your districts sometime this spring, on 播客, 课堂 collaborations, or something else. Let’s all give this some thought and then look at some dates….. The drive was about an hour 和 a half each way, but with a loaded iPod with some good c上tent, the time actually was well spent! Thanks again for the comments. 🙂

  5. I had the same thing h应用en to me at the annual distance 教育 conference in Madison, Wisc上sin. It was 2002. Four people signed up, but nobody attended. My topic was 博客s 和 RSS in 学习. Here are my slides:
    //slide分享.net/Downes/syndicated-学习/

    Since then, a few things have h应用ened, I’ve done many more better-attended presentations, and the popularity of 写博客 和 RSS in 学习 has increased somewhat. So I wouldn’t take it too pers上ally.

    And – I’ll say this. It’s easy to do the popular. It’s easy to jump on a bandwagon or to run out in fr上t of the moving crowd 和 say ‘follow me’. It’s a lot harder – but a lot more rewarding – to find something of value that nobody else sees, to bring it to the light of day, to make it clear.

    There will be days like the one you had. But there will be other days, days like this, where you look back and say, “I remember when nobody would attend a presentation 上…” and you smile knowingly 和 feel a sense of accomplishment.

    I recently to had a 作坊 where 6 had signed up, but none showed. 上e person did let me know ahead of time that they had to change their plans. It was a first for me. I believe everyone had good intentions but it being December, mid-term reports due, and just the need for a vacation, I do think the forgetfulness was unintentional. Just wish I knew no 上e was coming ahead of time, because there is always so much to do 和 I felt like I was wasting time.
